I first recorded Donal and his lovely wife, Annie, for the audiobook versions of The Spinning Heart and Heart, Be at Peace back in 2024. They each voiced a few characters from the books and had a few chapters to read. I must admit to having been a little apprehensive before their arrival, but I needn’t have been. A lovelier, more down-to-earth couple you couldn’t meet and excellent on mic, too. So I was honoured when I was asked to record with Donal again, this time reading the entirety of his new novel, Where Are the Kings. One of the perks of recording with authors is that almost all queries about the text are answered instantly. Another is that you’re hearing how the author’s work sounded in their mind when they were writing it. And I can say with certainty that Donal isn’t just a great writer, but also a great storyteller.
